New York City is grappling with a massive waste problem, with over 14 million tons of trash every year exceeding its disposal capacity. This has led to the export of waste to developing countries and endless incineration, causing significant environmental destruction. Waste production occurs unconsciously throughout the day, while waste management operates in marginalized time and space, detached from our daily lives. However, the city’s waste issues have now reached a critical point and become increasingly visible, demanding immediate attention and action. In response, the team proposes “Plastic Living”, an art residence to raise public awareness about waste and its potential as a resource for creative works. The residence features 12 living units for short-term young professional residents and long-term artist residents. Decentralized throughout the apartment, common spaces such as community areas, galleries, and workshops encourage collaboration among the residents, fostering a creative environment focused on the exploration of materials.
